“Soon” – Bing Crosby with Georgie Stoll & His Orchestra

1 Week at No. 1 (April 20, 1935)

The first credible and consistent music chart I could find is a Lucky Strike sponsored “Your Hit Parade” chart and its first number one is a Rodgers and Hart number from a musical comedy by Bing Crosby.

A simple croon with the classic vocals of Crosby. It’s easy to see just how influential he would become and there’s no denying his significance to pop music in the early to mid 20th century. This ballad comes from the film Mississippi, a musical comedy staring Crosby himself alongside W.C. Fields and Joan Bennett. It’s a very inoffensive love ballad with a controlled orchestra with violin, clarinet and muted trumpet sections in its instrumental. Perhaps not one of his best, but certainly has a nice ring to it and I wouldn’t mind hearing it again on its own.
