“Lovely To Look At” – Eddy Duchin & Orchestra

1 Week at No. 1 (April 27, 1935)

Eddy Duchin was a popular pianist from Cambridge, Massachusetts. He had increased popularity in radio broadcasts which led to his increased record sales. He also performed piano on this number from the musical film Roberta starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

In a scene where Rogers and Astaire dance, the wonderful tune “Lovely To Look At” plays and the commercially released version is that of Eddy Duchin with a vocal by Lew Sherwood, someone Duchin would regularly have to provide vocals over his orchestra. And I must say that this song is absolutely wonderful.

It’s everything I could imagine an actually happy love song to sound like. The jumping riff of the trumpet, piano, and saxophone and sweet vocals with innocent lyrics. This conveys a true and almost naive emotion that resonates with just about anyone. Beautiful arrangement and excellent musicianship, in just a 3 minute song.
